TOWNSHIP TOUR

Interact with the locals and discover the real South African culture with our half day tour through the informal settlements of Langa.

In a nutshell

During this guided walking tour through Cape Town’s most vibrant, colourful and lively township you will get the unique opportunity to interact with residents, try locally brewed beer, visit an African arts and crafts market and eat a typical South African meal you never had before.

Experience it!
This will probably be the tour that you remember most, long after you leave the mother city of Cape Town. The only way of truly experiencing the friendliness, warmth and humanity of Langa’s residents is by walking the streets. And who better can show you Langa than a born and bred resident and tour guide of Cape Town’s oldest black township? Smell the street barbeques, learn to pronounce umqombothi and hear the children at play!

The tour will commence at Guga S´tebe Arts & Culture Centre. The centre is housed in a brightly coloured building made of containers and dedicated to empowerment of the local people. It has an exhibition area, art studio and an auditorium for dance, musical and film. The centre also houses an espresso bar called Kaffahoist Sherberts where you will find Langa’s best Cappuccino! After viewing a local pottery production, you will have the opportunity to visit the Langa Township Heritage Museum. It was once a pass office and court in the Apartheid and you will get to see an original “dompas”: the official document that only black people had to carry with them to prove their identity and where they could live or work. Your walk continues through the different housing and socio-economic areas, including worker hostels, informal settlements and arts and crafts markets. Many community projects can be found her, with crafts such as beading, weaving, wire goods and fabric making. A meet and greet with residents along the way and a typical African beer tasting at one of the ever-present local shebeens don’t miss out.

Despite the tragic and often troubled history of Langa’s Township the area still retain a strong sense of culture with a vibrant community atmosphere and plenty of food, entertainment and enterprise. We are sure to leave you with a better understanding of Cape Town’s history and cultures and will give you an experience of a lifetime.
